A36 is the plate-and-structural grade, and for a large mold body machined from solid it is the economical choice: the material is inexpensive and available in thick plate, and the finished surfaces are all machined so the hot-rolled skin does not matter. The cost is in the roughing. A deep pocket in steel is removed in stepped passes with the part clamped hard, then finished with lighter cuts once the bulk of the stress is out of the block.

Features on several faces mean several setups, each picked up from the previous one with the probe. The bolt patterns on the flanges are what mate this half to its partner, so their position is checked between operations, not only at the end.
