Milling a Keyway in a Stainless Steel Shaft
A stainless steel shaft held in a vise on the vertical mill while a keyway is milled into the shaft.
This shop-floor example shows a keyway being milled into a stainless steel shaft. A keyway provides a seat for the key used to transmit torque between a shaft and a mating component.
Keyway width, depth and axial location are defined by the part drawing and mating assembly. The shaft must be held securely during milling, and the finished feature checked against those requirements.
