Cross-Drilling a Stainless Shaft
A turned stainless shaft held in a vise on the vertical mill for a cross-hole: the second operation that turns a plain shaft into a pinned assembly component.

The cross-hole in a shaft is a small feature with a large consequence: if it is off centre, the pin or set screw loads one side of the bore and the assembly wobbles. The hole is drilled with the shaft located on the spindle centreline and the axial position picked up from a shoulder, so the hole is true to both the axis and the length.
Where a lathe with live tooling is available the cross-hole can be cut in the turning setup; for shafts already turned, or lots too small to justify the live-tool program, the mill is the faster route. Either way the hole is checked for position, not just for size.
