Drill Size Chart —
Number, Letter, and Fractional Decimal Equivalents

Every standard twist drill in a single sorted list: number (wire gauge) sizes #80 through #1, letter sizes A through Z, fractional sizes from 1/64" to 1", and the standard metric sizes, each with decimal inch and millimeter equivalents. The series interleave to put a stock drill within a few thousandths of almost any hole you need.[1]

How to Use This Chart

Reading a callout. A drawing that says "DRILL #7 (.201)" or ".201 DIA" means the same hole. Modern drawings increasingly give the decimal only and let the shop choose the tool; this chart is the translation table in both directions.

Drilled-hole accuracy. A twist drill is a roughing tool. Expect a drilled hole to run 0.002 to 0.005" oversize in most materials, with more variation in deep holes. For a hole with a real diameter tolerance, plan on drilling undersize and reaming or boring to finish, and see our DFM guide for how hole callouts drive cost.

Metric substitution. Because the list is sorted by size, near-equivalents sit next to each other: 6.8 mm (0.2677") lands a thousandth over the letter H (0.2660"), and 3.3 mm (0.1299") falls between #30 and #29. Shops running mixed inch and metric work use these crossovers daily.

In plain terms
Three drill families exist because threads and clearance holes need finer steps than 1/64" fractions provide. Number and letter drills fill the gaps. If you are specifying a hole, call out the finished diameter and tolerance you actually need rather than a drill number; the shop will pick the tool, and tighter-than-drilled tolerances will be reamed or bored anyway.
